'Juxtapositions' is a unique collection focusing on contemporary music. Each video explores the world of a particular composer via one or more works, with the composers and their most famous interpreters playing an active part in the process of elucidation. As we travel from Gustav Mahler to Arvo Part, from Europe to America and Asia, new musical continents emerge and burst into passionate life, radically reshaping the contours of our phonic landscape. In this title of 'Juxtapositions', the viewer embarks on a thrilling voyage of discovery directed by Frank Scheffer, whose talent and rigor make him one of the foremost cinematographers of our time.
Attrazione D'Amore (1998)
'Attrazione d'Amore' is a touching illustration of the unique relation that has developed between the Conductor Riccardo Chailly and his famous Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Juxtaposing rehearsals and performances of works by Mahler, Mozart, Debussy, Stravinsky and Varese as well as Puccini's Tosca, Frank Scheffer paints a fascinating portrait of mutual love between a Conductor and an orchestra based on the magical attraction of music. The film also features interviews of Luciano Berio and Riccardo Chailly himself.
Voyage to Cythera (1999)
In 1968 Luciano Berio, composer and pioneer of electroacoustic music, created 'Sinfonia', a memorable orchestral piece and harmonic journey through references to composers such as Stravinsky, Boulez, Schonberg, Stockhausen and most of all, Mahler. Just as 'Sinfonia' uses the image of a river to connect its various elements, 'Voyage to Cythera' navigates through wonderful musical quotes made of performances conducted by Berio, rehearsals, archival documents and interviews featuring Riccardo Chailly and Louis Andriessen.- Actors:
