The Sally Army are in need of some salvation themselves - salvation that is from their own dotty Captain Emily Ridley (Thora Hird). For over forty-two years, Captain Emily has been in the forefront of the Army's battle against sin and sinners in that modern Sodom and Gomorrah - Yorkshire. She's all fired up with a wild enthusiasm that regular members find 'a little embarrassing' and is only too likely to say just the wrong thing at the wrong time. The top people at the Salvation Army want her to retire, but Captain Emily insists she has a good few year's tambourine-banging left in her yet. The Sally Army compromise by sending her to Brigthorpe. It's one of the nicest, most inoffensive places in Britain, but Captain Emily just knows that vile corruption lies behind each and every net curtain in town and sets off with renewed vigour to expose the sinners and fornicators amongst us.
