Synopsis:
Bob Sessions narrates this history documentary, part of the History of Warfare series, about the epic struggle between Carthage and Rome. In the second century BC, the great Carthaginian general Hannibal took his army from North Africa to Spain, and then in an epic crossing of the Alps into Italy. With overwhelming victories at Trebbia and Cannae, victory in the wars seemed certain. But Hannibal had not counted on the Roman approach to war, where no sacrifice was too great in the pursuit of final victory. Under Roman general Scipio, the Carthaginians were pushed back and utterly crushed at Zamma, their city burned to the ground.
Featuring battle reconstruction, dramatised 'eyewitness' testimony, and expert analysis, this documentary seeks to explain how the Romans were able to achieve victory against the odds.
