- Hebe is an independent woman living in Cornwall. Her life has changed dramatically since she fled from her family as a young girl. Inflamed by their decision that she must terminate her illegitimate pregnancy, she decided to make a new life for herself. Now she survives by working as a gourmet cook for wealthy old ladies and as an expensive mistress for wealthy men - her 'peacocks'. One summer however, when a young antiques dealer Jim, and his old bachelor assistant arrive in town, Hebe's secret past in under threat. Jim and Hebe have met before. But will their reconciliation shape both their futures, or just uncover the past?
