Dare Rudd (John Wayne) is a cowboy drifter with an obsession for gambling who, whilst passing through Montana looking for a turn of a card or maybe some work if the luck runs dry, meets his cousin the well respected and influential cattleman Tom Fillmore (Johnny Mack Brown). Rudd finds a poker game but Lady Luck is not on his side and he also suspects the other players are dishonest card-sharks. Fillmore's girlfriend Judy Worstall (Marsha Hunt) is attracted to Rudd and asks Fillmore to give Rudd a steady job as head drover on the ranch's cross country cattle drive. Against his better judgement Fillmore agrees to hire Rudd and his sidekick Bart Hammond (Monte Blue). Fillmore and Rudd's working relationship becomes more complicated when they discover they are rivals for the affections of Judy. Tempers run high and fuses are lit as the drive gets underway and the turmoil increases when, after sorting out the town's crooked poker players, they encounter ruthless cattle rustlers.
