Kenrick Maple is an investment bank in the City. It is an institution and a bastion of tradition that has belatedly recognised a need to change. To achieve this change, it has appointed as chairman Nicholas Quinn. This appointment brings Quinn into conflict with Bruce Morton, the bank's managing director who is outraged at Quinn's crassness and his determination to 'revamp' the company. Quinn regards Morton as a challenge to be dealt with by employing his considerable interpersonal skills. Bruce regards Nicholas as a challenge to his sanity. Greg Hayden, a young high-flier, is caught in the middle and although loyal to his immediate boss Morton, he often acts as mediator, trying to limit the fallout from their frequent explosions.
