The film is centred around two aging characters, Nat (Walter Matthau), a curmudgeonly and caustic mischief maker, and Midge (Ossie Davis), a janitor who's seen better days, as they meet daily on a Central Park bench to put the world to right. Their proud, dignified, more traditional view of the world seems a million miles away from the urban flotsam and jetsam they encounter in the park: a drug addict, an ambitious mugger and a dangerous drug dealer. On top of all this, Nat's daughter is nagging him to go into a home while Midge's boss is trying to make him retire.
