Fresh, sweet and back on the street - that's Nicky Burkett (Chiwetel Ejiofor), just out of jail and never planning on going back. But life has other plans, and from his first minute of freedom he can't seem to help but make trouble for himself despite the incentives of his son Danny and his dream girl Noreen (Thandie Newton). Forced by an incredible run of bad luck, Nicky rekindles a hard man reputation he can't shake off, bringing trouble and strife into his life in the form of the mad Mickey Cousins (Max Beesley), hard man Rameez, policeman Holdsworth and old-time villain, Fitch.
