In a small village, the kind hearted Nastenka (Natalya Sedykh) lives a miserable life, ever-suffering under the cruel heel of her stepmother and stepsister, while her father caters to his demanding wife's whims and endures her incessant insults. In another village far away, Ivanushka (Eduard Izotov) begins his journey to manhood by leaving home. However, Ivanushka's pride must be tamed if he is to be the worthwhile man his elderly mother wishes him to be. Among the trials Ivanushka must face are an attack by bloodthirsty forest bandits, the transforming spells of Grandfather Mushroom (Aleksandr Khvylya) and the evil witch Baba Yaga (Georgiy Millyar), who lives in a house perched atop giant chicken egg. Yet the forest also houses kindly Jack Frost, who paints the landscape with snow and offers guidance to those who seek wisdom. Needless to say, Nastenka and Ivanushka meet and fall in love. Whether they have a happy ending depends on how they conquer the fantastic obstacles before them.
