The great veteran pianist Jay McShann, nicknamed Hootie, has enjoyed a remarkable and long career and it is unfair to primarily think of him as merely the leader of an orchestra that featured a young Charlie Parker, as many contemporary jazz and blues musicians credit McShann as a major influence in their formative years. He is mostly self-taught as a pianist and over the past seven decades has delivered the hard swinging music of Kansas City imbued with foot pattin' rhythms, boogie woogie beats, and the cryin' and shoutin' blues.
