Synopsis:
In 1971, Johnny Cash was sitting on top of the world, riding a wave of hit singles that had topped the C and W chart, winning a Grammy with his wife and duet partner June Carter Cash for their rendition of "If I Were A Carpenter," and, since 1969, hosting on network television a weekly music-variety program whose guests included no less than the usually camera-shy Bob Dylan. Cash (1932-2003) was also an immensely popular concert attraction, touring internationally at the helm of the stellar revue that was featured on his TV show - and graces this feature.
Feature spotlights the great singer-songwriter and his road company before an audience that delights in the country, rockabilly, American roots music, and spirituals that comprise the evening's repertoire. Live In Denmark presents the "Man In Black" (which also happened to be the title of what was at the time his latest self-penned smash), backed by his air¬tight back-up band, the Tennessee Three. The 19-song set also brings to the fore June Carter Cash in three duets with Cash, including "If I Were A Carpenter." June's mother (and Cash's mother-in-law), the legendary Maybelle Carter, matriarch of the First Family of Country Music, is also here, as are Mother Maybelle's other two talented daughters, Anita and Helen. On board, as well, are rockabilly eminence Carl Perkins (of "Blue Suede Shoes" immortality) and the Statler Brothers, much loved for their off-the-wall humor and homespun four-part harmonies. Among Cash's contributions are two classics from his early days in the mid-1950s, "I Walk The Line" and "Guess Things Happen That Way"; Kris Kristofferson (whom he had recently discovered) found a definitive interpreter in Cash, witness "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" and "Me And Bobby McGee"; the comical story of "A Boy Named Sue" crossed over to number two on the pop side while topping the C and W chart, and the aforementioned "Man In Black" introduced Cash's alter ego who stood up for underdogs everywhere. The stirring gospel finale of Cash's "Children, Go Where I Send Thee" is the perfect ending to a most ebullient performance by one and all.
