Frances Ethel Gumm was born on 10th June 1922 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and made her first public appearance at Christmas in 1924 at the ripe age of 2 and 1/2 years. Her sisters, Mary Jane (Susie) and Dorothy Virginia (Jimmie), were already performing but when Frances (Baby) joined them their modest success began to blossom. In a bid to further their daughters' careers the family moved to Lancaster near Los Angeles where all three girls were immediately enrolled in singing and dancing classes. In 1934 they changed their stage name from Gumm to Garland and Baby became Judy but when Susie got married in 1935 the act broke up. Judy's mother Ethel was determined to have 'Baby' audition for the film companies and after the mighty MGM saw and heard the captivating 13 year old perform 'Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart' Judy's legacy to the world of entertainment was assured. In 'Legends' we relive the sight and sound of one of the 20th century's most memorable talents, singing the songs she made her own such as 'Zing!' and arguably her best-loved classic 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'. Her life has been our lasting pleasure.
