Janko Bugarski, aka Jimmy Barka (Dragan Nikolic), has to leave his temporary employment as a seasonal worker together with his girlfriend Lilica (Neda Spasojevic). Without a job, he sets off with Lilica into uncertainty. His mother, a poor washerwoman, cannot help him, and there are no jobs in factories and companies. In order to get the money, Jimmy steals from workers at a construction site and while running away from his pursuers, he loses Lilica. Then Jimmy Barka's odyssey begins. He meets a bar singer, Duška (Ruzica Sokic), becomes her lover and learns to sing. He sings very badly, but that doesn't stop him from traveling around small towns, singing at fairs and remote military garrisons. In a small town, he meets Bojana (Zorica Sumadinac), a young dental technician, and goes with her to Belgrade for a competition of young singers. Instead of applause and affirmation, he is greeted by whistles and insults. Jimmy runs away alone and on a ship meets Lilica again, who lives by pickpocketing and simulating pregnancy. They both go to the manager of the former construction site, Milutin (Slobodan Aligrudic), in an attempt to blackmail him: the young woman is allegedly carrying his child. Milutin discovers that he has been tricked. He tries to rape Lilica, but Jimmy stops him. He tries to kill him and mocks him in front of the workers. Humiliated and annoyed, the headmaster takes his rifle and kills Jimmy.
