"Kal Aaj Aur Kal" is the story of yesterday, today and tomorrow, three generations brought together to swim in the river of time. Three generations of a family represented by Diwan Saheb (Prithviraj Kapoor), his son Ram (Raj Kapoor) and Ram's son Rajesh (Randhir Kapoor). Diwan Saheb lives in the past, while his grandson Rajesh, studying in London, is ambitious and impatient for what the future holds. Caught between them is Ram, his life is filled with material wealth but empty of love and companionship. He calls Rajesh back from London who in turn persuades his grandfather to come and live with them. Ram's happiness knows no bounds - at last, his beloved family together again. But his happiness is short lived as yesterday and tomorrow begin to clash. Diwan Saheb sees Rajesh's lifestyle as depraved and wasteful, while Rajesh is scornful of his grandfather's religious inclinations. Things come to a head on the issue of Rajesh's marriage as he refuses Diwan Saheb's arranged match because of his love for Monica. With no resolution to their conflict, grandfather and grandson, ask Ram to choose between them. Poor Ram, torn between his son and father, decides to leave home. Will Ram return? Will today ever succeed in bridging the gap between yesterday and tomorrow? 'Kal Aaj Aur Kal' is the only film in which 3 generations of the illustrious Kapoor family acted together. It marked Randhir Kapoor's directorial debut in which he also directed his wife-to-be Babita. It was also the last Shankar Jaikishan score in a RK Film with hit songs like "Bhanware Ki Gunjan" and "Aap Yahaan Aaye Kisliye".
