Mikhail Shapiro's classic 1966 film marked the official acceptance of Shostakovich's operative masterpiece Katerina Izamailova (the composer's reworking of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, which had incurred Stalin's displeasure and put Shostakovich's life at risk). Featuring a newly restored print and available for the first time outside Russia, this widescreen presentation of Shostakovich's "dark and deadly" drama stars the great Russian soprano, Galina Vishnevskaya, as the eponymous murderess.
