George Withers Aunt Georgina passes away, leaving her considerable estate to charity, much to the displeasure of her family. The only exceptions are a collection of mementoes, which are to be sold at public auction. She also leaves her favourite nephew George (Formby) a letter, telling him that a fortune is hidden inside one of the dining room chairs going to auction. However, her simple plan to pass on her fortune in secret goes awry when George, outbidding himself finds he doesn't have the money to pay for the chairs, and they are split up and sold off separately. First trying unsuccessfully to borrow the money from his solicitor (Alastair Sim), then involving a con man (Gus McNaughton), who is in it for a cut of the profits, George sets off on a hare-brained journey to recapture his lost fortune. Along the way he falls in love - but can he win back his money and marry the love of his life (Florence Desmond) before time runs out?
