- In 1976 thirty-six bombs detonated across Cleveland as a turf war raged between Irish mobster Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson) and the Mafia. Based on true events, this "explosive crime storys" chronicles Greene's legendary rise from local trouble-maker to top mob enforcer. Turning the tables on loan shark Shondor Birns (Christopher Walken) and joining forces with gangster John Nardi (Vincent D'Onofrio), Greene cut his ties to the Mafia, and began moving in on their turf. Surviving countless assassination attempts, Greene's infamous fearlessness and brutality eventually led to the collapse of mafia syndicates across the U.S. and earned him the status as the one man the mob couldn't kill.

Based on the true story of Irish-American Danny Greene Kill the Irishman (aka Bullet Proof Gangster) is a crime drama starring Ray Stevenson, Vincent D’Onofrio and Val Kilmer in which Stevenson plays lead Danny Greene, as he rises through the ranks of the Cleveland Mafia and leads a double life as a FBI Informer.
Greene survives several assassination attacks and becomes notorious as the Robin Hood of Cleveland, trying to assist those in the local poor community who are under the grip of the Italian Mafia.
The story of Greene is certainly an interesting and inspirational one. However the film portrays it in a totally one-dimensional manner. Kill the Irishman could be any other gangster movie with almost any other cast and story, it relies on un-original clichés and tropes of the genre and fails entirely to tell Greene’s story to the level it deserves.
Greene is the most stereotypical Irish-American you could meet, whilst the bad guys are practically tying women to train tracks and twiddling their mustachios. There is almost nothing that makes this film stand out from it’s peers, which is perfect for some as it is entertaining enough to kill a couple of hours whilst being mindless enough to wash over you completely. Essentially Kill the Irishman does exactly what it says on the tin, a 70’s set gangster film with a lot of explosions, if this is what you’re in the mood for, look no further but do not expect any depth or character from the movie.
