The DancerNinel Alexandrovna Kurgapkina (1929-2009) was a heralded dancer and Prima Ballerina with Russia's Kirov Ballet for 25 years. During her tenure with the legendary Company, she became renowned for her distinctive style-which is best remembered for her raw, organic dance movements that captured her sense of playfulness and beautifully juxtaposed the customarily formal Soviet Ballet tradition. Ninel Kurgapkina's longtime presence in the Ballet world, her famed partnerships with Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov, and her remarkable personality made the ballerina one of most beloved Russian dancers of the 20th Century.
