In 1917, in St. Petersburg the young English journalist Ainsley J. Fothergill (Robert Donat) expelled from Russia for criticizing the imperial regime in an article, is persuaded by an agent of the British Secret Service to join the members of the revolutionary movement. But Fotheringill is involved in an attempt to assassinate Viadinoff (Herbert Lomas) the interior minister, discovered the young man is deported to Siberia. There he tried to flee with the beautiful Countess Alexandra (Marlene Dietrich).
