The beginning of the 18th century. The border of Bosnia and Dalmatia, the Turkish Empire and the Venetian Republic. The young and cruel horseman Petar Revac (Niksa Kuselj), in the service of the Venetian border unit, flees to Bosnia and accepts Islam. He falls in love with Lejla (Zrinka Cvitesic), the daughter of a tobacconist. Revac kills Lejla's suitor Mujaga (Mladen Vulic), and Lejla flees under the protection of the Venetian providor to Zadar and converts from Islam to the Catholic faith. Their desire is to outwit both sides and escape together to a third country: the Austrian Empire. The result is a fierce political conflict between the two strongest powers of Southeast Europe - the Republic of Venice and the Turkish Empire.
