Claude Ratinier (Louis de Funes), an old farmer, lives across the road from his long-time friend Francis Cherasse (Jean Carmet). The two spend their days making cabbage soup, eating it, and getting drunk on French liquor, they spend their nights drinking more and belching the intestinal gas given to them by cabbage soup. Strangely, their farting sounds like a cry for help to the inhabitants of planet Oxo. One night, their farting summons an alien from Oxo (Jacques Villeret), who comes in a flying saucer. The two friends report this flying saucer to the townsfolk and the mayor, who, in turn, dismiss them as old drunks and make fun of them. Dismayed, the two vow revenge upon their tormentors. To complicate the situation, a dead wife suddenly arrives. Because the two friends refuse to sell their old farms to benefit the town's economic expansion, the mayor puts them in cages and treats them like extinct animals. However, the alien comes to their aid, and, in the end, they get what they want.
