First broadcast by Channel 4 in 1985, 'Lakeland Rock' is a mountaineering classic. Presented by Sir Chris Bonington, this collection of films features five milestone climbs, each representing a major development in a sport which has mirrored social change in Britain. From the 1940s when working men first took to the mountains, through to the 1980s with the continuing developments in technology, the progress of women climbers and fitness at near Olympian standards. In three of the films the climbers who made the first ascents recreate their climbs, including fitting tributes to the much missed Don Whillans and Bill Peascod. Among the other highlights is a filmed first ascent of 'Incantations' on Gable Crag by Pete Whillance and Dave Armstrong, which at E6 6b was then the hardest climb in the lake District. The innovative filming and production - which create a real sense of nail biting tension - combined with the breathtaking scenery, make 'Lakeland Rock' accessible both to climbers and everyone with affection for the English lake District.
