The Sun sizzles over e blinding expense of white salt flats. Suddenly, a streak of colour fleshes across the horizon followed by the bone-rattling roar of turbine engines. Onlookers end technicians watch in amazement as John Fincher's rocket car blazes toward the land speed record and into history before disintegrating into a cart wheeling inferno of twisted steel. Twenty years later and the salt flats look the same, but the cars have moved into the jet age. A multi-national oil corporation has laid down a challenge to break through the 1000 mph barrier. Few believe it can be achieved. Pitting himself against a giant aeronautical company, the late John Fincher's former chief engineer, Brian Singer (Ray Wise), enters an independent team with his son as the driver in the hope of recapturing the spirit and memory of the golden age of land speed record breaking.
