July 8th, 2011 saw the Space Shuttle Atlantis blast-off from the Kennedy Space Centre, marking the end of an era. After thirty-four flights into space, this iconic craft, along with the rest of the shuttle fleet, entered retirement. In fact it may be many years before NASA sends a man into space again. For this programme NASA granted Discovery Channel unprecedented access behind the scenes of this historic event in order to tell the untold stories of those who have devoted much their lives to the shuttle missions. Indeed Last Flight of the Space Shuttle follows the preparations for the final mission and tells the story of the shuttle programme through the eyes of the people who knew it best. Featuring interviews with four crewmembers of the last Atlantis flight: Mission Specialists Sandy Magnus and Rex Walheim, as well as Commander Chris Ferguson and Pilot Doug Hurley. As well as interviews with Captain Bob Crippen, the celebrated pilot of the first Atlantis mission and Jerry Sheehan, NASA's director of engineering. This awe-inspiring documentary illustrates perfectly the intricate preparations needed for this momentous final mission and also includes the historic countdown and launch of the shuttle Atlantis from Kennedy Space Centre...
