A 'Hootenanny' was originally a get-together or guitar pull on the folk scene of the late 50s and early 60s. The term had a kind of currency back then when there was even a Hootenanny show alongside the likes of other music TV classics like Hullabaloo. I'm not sure we knew all this when we convened our first New Year's Ever show for BBC2 back in 1993. We just thought the word sounded a little quaint and a little nonsensical and Jools could imagine shouting it out in the studio. Jools has been welcoming in the New year with the nation for 11 years now on BBC2 and it is undoubtedly the moment when his highly successful Rhythm and Blues Orchestra come into their absolute own Jools and the Orchestra do all manner of big band styles: they can play the blues with B.B. King, boogie woogie with Robert Plant, get soulful with Solomon Burke or swing Sinatra-style with Huey from the Fun Lovin' Criminals. Now thanks to this DVD you can pour yourself a drink, surround yourself with the cream of British celebrity and sing along to some of the greatest songs in pop music anytime you like. Ladies and gentlemen, let's Hootenanny!
