The lovers Vidya and Ranvir meet. Vidya becomes pregnant. While he insists on abortion Vidya insists that she will give birth to the child, bring him up and wait for his return into her life. Ranvir leaves her. Vidya dies with the impression that her child was still-born, but the child grows up into a man, without a family name, a man without education and without any values. Laawaris is the story of that man's quest for food, for love and belonging. As years roll by, Kunvar Ranvir repents, becomes a saintly, generous and highly respected man in the legitimate society. Fate brings the father and his first son face to face, though they do not know how they are related. But as their contact grows Kunvar Ranvir is so much impressed and affected by the qualities of the Laawaris-Hira, who has been spurned by the society, that he develops affection for him so much so that he wishes that Hira was his own son in place of his real son Mahendar who had drifted into filth and antisocial values. The son and father come to know their real relationship , but the social values of the society keep them apart inspite of their liking of each other. The son wants his father to undo the wrong done to him and call him his son. The father burdened by his respectable image in society does not have courage enough to come out into the open and confess and own his son. A little girl who was the daughter of Hira's childhood employer grows into a modern young girl and keeps on sparking love and courage in the Laawaris Hira that he faces the world bravely. Ultimately fate compels Kunvar Ranvir to face the truth, in presence of the society that respects and adores him, he dares to come forward and own Hira up as his son. While the wrong values of the society condemn Hira the Laawaris he stands like a towering person at peace with his heart and soul to claim his rightful place in the sun for himself. And he is a Laawaris no more
