- The ruthless Count Gonzague is in line to inherit a fortune from his dashing cousin the Duke of Nevers and won't let anyone stand in his way, hiring young swordsman Lagardère to be the assassin. But when the young Lagardère switches his allegiance and becomes a loyal friend of Nevers, the Count leads his henchmen into battle on the Duke's wedding day. When the bloodshed is over and many lives are lost, Lagardère is left to protect and raise his friend's orphaned infant and swears vengeance will one day be his.
