"Le Cateau" is the next part in 'The First World War' series from BHTV and Pen and Sword Digital and follows the exploits of the British Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Following the initial battle at Mons, this video analyses the Battle at Le Cateau and the retreat that followed. Having temporarily checked the Germans at Mons the BEF, being heavily outnumbered by the enemy, had no alternative but to withdraw along with Lanrezac's Fifth French Army. The Germans, however, were soon in hot pursuit, sensing that the BEF were at their mercy. Despite Field Marshal French's instructions to retreat, General Smith-Dorrien knew that he had to turn and fight on the open chalk hills above the town of Le Cateau. Here II Corps stood as the German pressure mounted and a desperate battle ensued as more and more German troops came into action; men fell, guns were lost and saved but again, the BEF were able to escape with an epic night march, while the Germans halted on the battlefield. Following the usual BHTV formula, the team of historians and battlefield guides take the viewer to the heart of the action to examine weapons, tactics and the courage of the men on the ground as they tell the story. Illustrated with maps, location scenes and re-enactment footage they make this most complicated of British battles easily understandable and is essential viewing for all military enthusiasts.
