Winning two awards at the 1971 Berlin Awards for Best Actor (Jean Gabin) and Best Actress (Simone Signoret), 'Le Chat' traces the bitter later years of a loveless marriage, as Julien and Clemence live in a shabby Parisian house in an atmosphere of mutual hatred and mistrust. Flashbacks to their youth show the lighter side of a once passionate love affair, but now Julien has transfered all the love he once had for his wife onto his cat. Signoret and Gabin form a bitter sweet double act in this film with little dialogue.
