The American Ballet Theatre performs Petipa's work to the accompaniment of music by, among others, Adolphe Adam, Léo Delibes, and Cesare Pugni. The ballet tells the story of three pirates, cast away on the Ionian coast during the Turkish occupation of Greece, who are hidden from the authorities by a group of local Greek women. When the women are kidnapped by the slave-trader Lankedem, the pirates have to come to their rescue.
