Robert Donat stars in his penultimate film as a country vicar who is forced to re-evaluate his life and beliefs. William Thorn (Donat) is the vicar of the Yorkshire village of Hinton St. John, where he lives with his wife Vera (Kay Walsh) and musically gifted daughter Susan (Adrienne Corri). On learning from his doctor that he only has a year to live, the normally safe and predictable Thorne begins to reassess his own life, in particular, how religion has affected him as an individual. Deciding that he needs to be more honest with his parishioners, he begins speaking openly about his beliefs, preaching freedom of thought and action. But he soon has to face a crisis of conscience when, unsure about how to raise the funds to pay for Susan's tuition at a music college, temptation rears its head.
