Synopsis:
Inspired by a fable by La Fontaine, Rameau produced perhaps his most brilliant music for his penultimate great work, blending reality and the surreal on several levels. This passionate new production by Jose Montalvo, stunningly choreographed by Jose Montalvo and Dominique Hervieu, sets new standards in entertainment, charm and ingenuity. The sharp and spectacular multimedia staging does full justice to Rameau's dazzling burlesque, confirming Olivier Rouviere's statement that 'Les Paladins is the last laugh of a witty 77-year old composer'.
Recorded live in 2004 at the Paris Theatre du Chatelet in true surround sound, both the virtuoso cast and Les Arts Florissants are in top form, clearly enjoying themselves in the masterful hands of William Christie.

Not the Rameau I'd expected. - Les Paladins: Jean-Philippe Rameau review by DW

Spoiler Alert

A real disappointment, Rameau's music absolutely overwhelmed by completely inappropriate production values. So fussy were the cartoon-like projections and the break-dance type "ballets" it hardly any longer mattered how well the singers performed. I gave it about 45 minutes and then felt obliged to retire.

Desperate Attempt Visually to make up for Vacuous Libretto - Les Paladins: Jean-Philippe Rameau review by CV

Spoiler Alert

I agree with the other reviewer mainly. The short up-rushing phrases of much of Rameau's music expressing a libretto that is virtually empty of any substance does make for some tedious viewing. However, to make up for this paucity of literary interest, at least, the choreography department have gone overboard with frenetic break-dancing that is completely at different tempos to the more stately music and seems quite divorced from it. The stage area is quite linear made up for by projections on one or two higher levels behind. These are also mostly pre-recorded film-strips and often show human figures metamorphosing into animals in comic-like chases, trampoline -bouncing and more frenetic dancing. There are much better productions of Rameau's operas so don't start with this one!
