When William Stanier left the GWR in 1932 and joined the LMS,he found a company burdened with numerous aging locomotive designs inherited from its pre-grouping constituent companies. The urgent need for new, large modern locomotives spurred Stanier on to produce his most well-loved designs, the Princess Royal,Princess Coronation and Jubilee classes. Their size and power won many admirers when the class was first introduced, and, now in preservation, the surviving locomotives remain popular with enthusiasts. This programme features a number of Stanier's finest designs.
