The LNER's most famous locomotives were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and Arthur Peppercorn. Appointed CME of GNR aged just 32,Gresley moved to the LNER in the 1923 grouping. Here he was to become inexorably linked with the record-breakers Flying Scotsman and Mallard. Peppercorn,a great admirer of Gresley's work, then set out to create more reliable Pacific locomotives.
