Rocked by an earthquake in AD62, the seaside city of Pompeii was buried beneath a mountain of volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD79. More than 2000 of its citizens lost their lives; they lay entombed within the city walls until Pompeii's rediscovery in 1748. The vast site continues to give up its secrets to this very day.
