Born in New Orleans on 4th August 1901, from the start 'Satchmo' knew that music would be his life; at age seven he bought his first cornet and played on street corners for food for his family. At the age of twelve, he was arrested for firing a pistol into the air on New Year's Eve and was sent to the 'Jones Home for Colored Waifs' and, in this unlikely setting, he perfected his music. Satchmo was released after 18 months and began his inexorable climb to fame and fortune; he played in several bands, in particular with Joe 'King' Oliver who became his guardian angel. In the early 20's he followed 'King' to Chicago and then moved onto New York where his individual style influenced many top musicians. Through the decades the hits kept coming, hits such as 'Hello Dolly' (63), which achieved the impossible by knocking the Beatles off the top spot. The great 'Satchmo' died in his sleep on the 6th July '71. In this fabulous 'Legends' title, we present a collection of timeless tunes and the reflected memories that are the legacy of Satchmo...a true musical genius.
