Scott Bartlett (Ropy Culkin), an awkward, sensitive 15-year-old, finds family life turned upside down after an outbreak of Lyme disease hits the community. As illness and paranoia spread, his parents - workaholic Mickey and overprotective Brenda - are on the verge of divorce; complicating matters, Scott has fallen in love with next-door-neighbour Adrianna Bragg (Emma Roberts), the only person in the world who seems to understand him. But her own family is deeply troubled, with an uptight mother conducting a not-so-clandestine love affair, and a father slowly slipping away from the effects of the disease; and when Scott's tempestuous older brother Jim (Kieran Culkin) arrives home on leave, conflict threatens to tear both families apart.
