"Mallard's record was the pinnacle of steam and it was the swansong". Anthony Coulls, NRM Senior Curator of Rail Vehicle Collections. Born of a century of technological development and scientific discovery, Mallard was one of the greatest steam locomotives ever created. She was not just sleek, powerful and quick; she was also beautiful. Sir Nigel Gresley, the LNER's Chief Mechanical Engineer who created her, had vast workshops and a huge industrial battalion at his disposal to develop the most advanced locomotive technologies. His Pacific A4 class was conceived at a time of railway elegance and luxury, but also at a time of fierce rivalry as the 'big four' railway companies entered into a war of speed to run the fastest trains in the country. It was an endeavour which culminated in Mallard setting the world speed record for a steam locomotive of 125.88 mph on 3 July 1938, a feat that still stands today. Packed with archive footage and interviews, this video tells the story of this magnificent machine.
