If you like escape from prison films then this is the daddy. The attention to detail is amazing and the performances are pretty much faultless and it's a true (how true I don't know) story to boot. Because it's B&W and set in WW2 it's almost got a documentary feel to it, conversations are minimal and the story is told in great detail visually, just how a good film should be. Add this to your list you won't regret it.
Rather slow to start but tension builds up when they escape.Shows the tedium of daily prison life.Ingenious the lengths he goes to in making his implements.well acted.
This is very authentic, filmed in the actual prison and the cell where the Resistance fighter Andre Devigny was imprisoned in and sentenced to death.
the way he escapes (not a spoiler) is truly inspirational,. as in Papillon or The Shawshank Redemption (a flop on release, but now a fave of many).
That makes this fascinating rather than entertaining fiction though. A solid prison drama based closely on fact.
It is like a real Mission Impossible!
