Played by warrior natives of the Masai Mara in South Kenya and inspired by Masai mythology, the film is a rare glimpse into the heart of a culture isolated from the rest of the world. Following the death of their Chief, a village is stricken by a drought which threatens the lives of its people and their livestock. The village elders dispatch a group of ten adolescents to hunt down a mythical lion in order to offer its mane up as a sacrifice to the Red God. They are lead by Lomotoon, the son of the village chief and his childhood friend, Merono. As the young men travel across the plains, they must face treachery, fear and rivalry in order to become true rain warriors.
