- Masters of Sex is an American period drama television series. It is loosely based on the 2009 novel by Thomas Maier and was developed for television by Michelle Ashford. It follows the research and exploits of Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson. While playing fast and loose with historical fact, it is an entertaining and informative look at the discussion of sexuality in the 1950s and 1960s, with characters including professionals, prostitutes, a provost’s wife, and many others.
