A commendably realistic drama focusing on the everyday lives of the staff and patients at the Henry Park Hospital, a fictional teaching hospital in the north west of England, Medics ran for five highly successful series between 1990 and 1995. This second series sees two new characters joining the regular cast: 'Doctor Who' legend Tom Baker is Geoffrey Hoyt, a colourful, eccentric and largely good-humoured professor of surgery, while Sue Johnston (Brookside, Waking the Dead) is beleaguered administrator Ruth Parry, who is forced into making some tough decisions - a number of enemies - in her ongoing struggle to control expenditure. The series also features Jimmi Harkishin (Coronation Street), Peter Wingfield (24) and Hugh Quarshie (Holby City).
