Memphis based Stax Records was one of the most important companies in the history of popular music. Founded by Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton, it represented one of the two main strands of American black music. The other was Tamla Motown. Together, these two provided the foundations from which today's music has evolved. Stax Records groomed its artists to produce a highly individualistic soul sound. Distribution deals with Atlantic saw Memphis, Tennessee become a focal point for a style of music that immediately appealed to the record buying public internationally. It quickly rocketed to levels that Gospel and Blues could never reach. This memorial concert was filmed live at the Palais De Festivale Hall in Cannes, France. It paid tribute to Stax Studios of Memphis. The original talent performed before a packed and wildly enthusiastic audience.
