The producers of Room With a View and Howard's End bring you a comedy starring Dianne Wiest as Elisbeth Beaumont, a world famous opera diva every bit as dramatic as the parts she plays. Her son Thomas (Stansals Merhar) is with her in Paris as she prepares for the role of Turandot, assisted by champagne socialite Sybil (Jerry Hall). Addicted to bizarre sexual encounters, Thomas finds himself an unwilling witness to a murder whilst concealed in a stranger's closet. Horrified, he flees the scene, but learns the next day that the victim (Simon Callow) was actually his father, who Elizabeth said had died when Thomas was a boy. Compelled to unearth the murderer's identity, Thomas accidentally stumbles in on Penelope (Jane Burkin), an actress in the middle of a session with her analyst. Dr Rey. Penelope, who has made a career as the French voice of Vanessa Redgrave (and as a result, suffers a major identity crisis), befriends Thomas as he embarks on a riotous quest through the classifieds, cafes and boulevards of Paris to unravel the mystery behind his father's death. Meanwhile, after accidentally eating some of her son''s hash brownies, Elisabeth and her best friend Claude (Bulle Ogier) become convinced that Thomas has been kidnapped, and attempt an hilarious rescue mission of their own.
