Yes, heavy metal history needs some rewriting right about now.
Why? Well, folks need to wrap their metalheads around the fact that Metal Church - everyone's favourite noggin-crunchers from Seattle - are actually in possession of no less than three of the finest heavy metal albums of all times - and these were made after the legendary, volatile, and now deceased David Wayne had left the band.The proof is in the pounding - once ex-heretic belter Mike Howe joined the fold, Metal Church went on an astonishing albeit brief run of high-minded, riff-mad classics, beginning with Blessing in Disguise in 1991, closing with the unsung and highly under-rated Hanging in the Balance from 1994.
In the middle sits an immense sledge of intelligent yet bruising metal called the Human Factor, and it is this album that Metal Church celebrates with this show-closing, firing-on-all-sixes live set from the Dynamo Festival in 1991.
As day turns to magical night, the faultless rhythm section of originals Kirk Arrington and Duke Erickson lay it down strong, while John Marshall and Craig Wells trade licks like Glenn and K.K. on steroids. Topping off the explosive show is the headbanging presence of Mike Howe, whose frontman skills (and huge mane of blonde hair!) evoke images of Sebastian Bach, Mike leading his charges capably through the fiercest set list this band would ever construct.
Once you lay eyes and ears on the majesty of metal church at their peak, it'll be hard to resist spreading the good word. Metal history will be re-written, and Metal Church, circa the Howe era, will warrant a proud and pounding chapter indeed...
