Documentary that examines the role the popular US rock band have played in the evolution of heavy metal music. Metallica, formed in California in 1981, were influenced by British hair metal bands of the late 1970s but quickly found their own musical identity. Credited with creating a new sub-genre of heavy metal, thrash metal, the band have both reinvigorated and reinvented the musical tradition to which they belong.
