Synopsis:
This Irish prison drama tells the story of Michael McCrea (Dafhyd Flynn), who while living with his grandfather (Lalor Roddy) in a Dublin housing estate, is caught holding a bag of drugs for his friend's older brother. Sentenced to three months in prison, Michael is taken under the wing of an unhinged older inmate (Moe Dunford). Researched with former prisoners, 'Michael Inside' takes a realistic look at the circumstances that lead to Michael's conviction, his time inside and how prison affects his thinking and behaviour.

Based on prison interviews - Michael Inside review by CW

Spoiler Alert
05/06/2019

Whew. I had to watch this over two nights because it was too depressing for one go. Young kid living with his grandfather because his father is in prison. Gets talked into holding drugs for a thug. Gets caught. Short prison sentence but v rough for him. Bullied and coerced to hold contraband. Grandfather forced to pay value of drugs to thugs. Our kid gets out. Gets into trouble again. Goes back in facing 3 years. Story ends. We know he will either die in prison or be forever in trouble. No hope. No way out. Dark, depressing and since it was well researched including prison interviews, probably accurate depiction of life in prison and thugs ruling the streets. Grim.

Depressingly real - Michael Inside review by TB

Spoiler Alert
10/02/2020

This is a very sad and depressing film about how society and living in a deprived area can so easily swallow up good young people and put them on a path of endless crime.

The young actor who plays Michael delivers a very strong performance that gives you a real appreciation of the circumstances and fraught emotions that he’s faced with.

Unfortunately this is a very real story for so many and shows how difficult it is to break away from a path of criminality that is fed and made even worse by our broken prison systems and the criminals that run the places on the inside.

A grim but honest and excellent film with a young actor who will surely go on to create a wave in the film industry.
