In the first of three series, marine biologist and professional diver, Monty Halls, turns his back on city life to become a 21st century beachcomber on the West Coast of Scotland. Inspired by his childhood love of otters, Monty and his dog Reuben move into a run-down cattle shed overlooking an isolated beach, which he turns into a basic but comfortable home for the Summer. And it couldn't start any better. The west coast enjoys the best weather anyone can remember in a generation. Unbroken sunshine allows him to explore the highlands and islands, looking for basking sharks, dolphins, seals, red deer, and of course otters. The sea shimmers in the sunlight, the sky is cornflower blue, and he experiences the west coast of Scotland at its' most glorious. Monty aims to become partially self-sufficient by fishing for mackerel as well as raising pigs, sheep, hens and growing his own vegetables. But he's no hermit and throws himself enthusiastically into community life of a kind he's ever experienced in the city. He takes part in the Applecross games, runs the annual Glamaig Hill Race on Skye and even throws an impromptu beach party when he finally catches some fish! By the end, Monty leaves Applecross with a heavy heart. He leaves golden Summer behind him, many new friends, and memories that will last a life time. "Monty Halls' Great Escape" is a series that embodies the dream we all share - to live a simple life, at the heart of nature, in a beautiful place.
