- In the blink of an eye, happily married Rebecca Lott (Elizabeth Perkins) becomes a widow or, as she puts it, "the 'W' word". She's not alone for lone, however, when her eccentric friend Sylvie (Whoopi Goldberg), neurotic younger sister Lucy (Gwyneth Paltrow) and controlling ex-stepmother Alberta (Kathleen Turner) move in with a lot of baggage - both emotional and literal! But when Alberta hires a sexy house painter (rocker Jon Bon Jovi in his screen debut) to raise Rebecca's spirits, he inspires unforeseen passion - and unexpected compassion - within each of the women, as they learn to let down their defences and let go of their innermost fears.
