It may be illegal, but in America the business of making illicit booze, or moonshine , is a multi-million dollar industry. This tradition dates back hundreds of years, and is considered by many to be nothing less than a way of life. This is the story of those who brew their shine often in the woods near their homes, using camouflaged equipment and the local authorities who try to keep them honest. The main ingredients in moonshine mash are water, sugar, corn and yeast, and deep in Appalachia, where many shiners live, there are some areas where more sugar is sold than local residents could possibly consume on their own. And it s no accident moonshine season is from June to October the height of the corn harvest and when the local foliage is at its peak, to hide the illegal operations.
This is a centuries old war and for the best in the industry, these months can mean over $100,000, tax free. The victors become stuff of legends, but one mistake and the losers face a prison sentence.- Genres:
